Sandomir discussed the passing of Phil Rizzuto including stories his unique style as a player and broadcaster, Hall of Fame speech moment, Mel Allen’s mentoring of Rizzuto’s broadcasting career, and how he met his wife Cora. We ended the segment by playing Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meatloaf which includes Rizzuto. We began the third segment with Wheeler playing the portion from the Meatloaf song including Rizzuto. Wheeler discussed the Meatloaf song with Rizzuto including its popularity among broadcasters as well as Rizzuto the broadcaster. He also discussed the state of broadcasting today. We will be chatting with Wheeler again next week to discuss the Phillies in greater depth than we were able to today. Gilbert discussed the Arizona Diamondbacks including their ascension to first place in the National League West including Brandon Webb’s scoreless inning streak, Justin Upton’s emergence in the majors, and his concerns about the club’s pitching staying consistent. Dickerson discussed the Detroit Tigers including the team’s woes of late including Jeremy Bonderman’s struggles, Kenny Rogers health, Gary Sheffield, and this week’s series in Cleveland. Cafardo discussed the Boston Red Sox including the Yankees closing in on their lead. He also discussed Eric Gagne including mention of Rob Dibble who he used as a source for his piece today. Footer discussed the Houston Astros including their trip to Los Angeles this week and Roy Oswalt’s performance last night.
